Marks are carried by the justification, not the list. A plan that names ten channels without defending any of them sits at the bottom of the band; one that defends four sits well above it.
MEM501 Individual Assignment 2
Part A: Project Scenario
1. Overview
In this assignment, you will produce a complete, professional Project Management Plan (PMP) for a real-world engineering project scenario assigned to you. The PMP is the primary planning output of PMBOK Process Group 2 and integrates all ten Knowledge Area subsidiary plans into a single governing document. Your deliverable must read as a professional project document — not an academic essay — written in structured plan language with appropriate tables, diagrams, and formal section headings.
This assignment directly mirrors the work of a practising project manager in the initiation and planning phases of an engineering project. It tests your ability to apply, synthesise, and produce — not just describe — the tools and frameworks taught across MEM 501 Sessions 1–11.
2. Assigned Project Scenarios
Your instructor will assign one of the following scenarios. Each scenario is sufficiently complex to support a full PMP. You may not choose your own scenario unless explicitly permitted by your instructor.
| ID | Project Title | Brief Description |
| S-01 | Al Dhafra Solar Farm — Phase 2 Expansion | Expand an existing utility-scale solar photovoltaic facility in Al Dhafra, Abu Dhabi by 300 MW. Involves land preparation, PV module procurement and installation, grid connection, substation upgrades, and commissioning.
Owner: Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA). Duration: 30 months. Budget: AED 1.8 billion. |
| S-02 | Abu Dhabi University — Engineering Faculty Building | Design and construct a new 12-storey Engineering Faculty building on the ADU Abu Dhabi campus. Includes academic laboratories, smart lecture halls, student collaboration spaces, and a rooftop solar installation. Owner:
ADU Facilities Management. Duration: 24 months. Budget: AED 280 million. |
| S-03 | Sharjah Industrial Water Recycling Plant | Design, build, and commission a 50,000 m³/day industrial wastewater treatment and recycling plant in the Sharjah Industrial Area. Includes civil works, mechanical and electrical systems, SCADA integration, and regulatory approval. Owner: Sharjah Environment & Protected Areas Authority. Duration: 28 months. Budget: AED 420 million. |
| S-04 | Yas Island Smart Mobility
Hub |
Develop a multi-modal smart transport interchange on Yas Island integrating autonomous vehicle drop-off zones, EV charging infrastructure, a pedestrian bridge, and a real-time passenger information system. Owner: Department of Municipalities and Transport, Abu Dhabi. Duration: 18 months. Budget: AED 175 million. |
Part B: Assignment Guidelines
3. Learning Outcomes Assessed
| CLO | Description & How Demonstrated |
| CLO 3 | Develop comprehensive project management strategies by integrating and applying advanced principles across all project phases — demonstrated by producing a complete, integrated PMP covering all PMBOK Knowledge Areas. |
| CLO 6 | Implement advanced strategies for managing project scope, time, cost, resources, quality, communication, risk, and stakeholders using critical thinking — demonstrated by the quality, completeness, and professional rigour of each subsidiary plan. |
| CLO 1 | Design advanced PM processes using leadership and innovative strategies — demonstrated through your integrated change control approach, stakeholder engagement strategy, and risk response planning. |
4. Deliverable Structure — Required Sections
Your PMP must contain all nine sections below in the exact order listed. Each section is a subsidiary plan or baseline document. Sections must use professional PM documentation language — structured prose supported by tables and diagrams where specified. Bullet-point-only sections will be penalised.
| Sec. | PMBOK | Section Title | Required Deliverable Content | Word Guidance |
| 1 | 4.1 | Project Charter | All 12 PMBOK charter components; signed authority block; assumption log | 350–450 words |
| 2 | 5.1–5.4 | Scope Management Plan & Scope Baseline | Scope Statement (8 components); WBS hierarchy diagram (hand-drawn or digital, min. 3 levels, 15+ work packages); WBS Dictionary extract (3 packages); scope change control procedure | 500–650 words + WBS diagram |
| 3 | 6.1 | Schedule Management Plan | Scheduling methodology; activity sequencing rationale; milestone schedule table (≥8 milestones); schedule compression policy (crashing vs fast-tracking) | 300–400 words + milestone table |
| 4 | 7.1 | Cost Management Plan | Cost estimation approach; budget summary by phase; contingency reserve policy; cost control thresholds and escalation triggers | 300–400 words + budget table |
| 5 | 8.1 | Quality Management Plan | Quality standards applicable to project; quality metrics (≥4); quality assurance activities; quality control checkpoints; non-
conformance management |
300–400 words |
| 6 | 9.1 | Resource Management Plan | RACI matrix (min. 8 roles × 8 work packages); resource breakdown structure; team development approach | 250–350 words + RACI table |
| 7 | 10.1 | Communications Management Plan | Stakeholder Register (≥8 stakeholders with
Power/Interest assessment); Engagement Assessment Matrix (Current vs Desired level); Communications Register (≥6 communication events) |
350–450 words + tables |
| 8 | 11.1–
11.5 |
Risk Management Plan & Risk Register | Risk strategy; RBS; Risk Register (≥10 risks with ID, description, category, P×I score, level, owner, response strategy, residual risk); 5×5 matrix (drawn) | 400–500 words + register table + matrix |
| 9 | 12.1 | Procurement
Management Plan |
Make-or-buy decisions for 3 work packages; contract type selection with rationale; vendor selection criteria; FIDIC or local contract reference | 250–350 words |
